Good Luck Rxs From Around The World!

Usher in More Good Luck This Year!

Another year is gone and soon it will be 2014.
Last year we brought you some foods that people
from other countries eat to usher in good luck.
If you read the post, then you may remember that people

in Spain and parts of Portugal eat 12 grapes.
Twelve being the number of months in a yr.

Well, we have a few more good luck traditions from around
the World, and none have anything to do with food.
a) Costa Rica-
The people do have some types of beans on the table, but they
also hope for a good year by carrying luggage.
That's right- at midnight Costa Ricans are carrying luggage up
and down the streets. The luggage may represent carrying out
bad things from one's home or they're hoping to travel somewhere.
b) Vienna Austria-
Melted lead. Yes, some in this picturesque city melt lead, then throw

it into cold water and see what shape it'll take.
The shape of the lead is suppose to foretell what will happen in the
New Yr.
c) Singapore-

The people of Singapore have a parade, but that's not all,
the floats traveling down the streets get manhandled.
Not really, the people are allowed to write funny things,
love notes, or messages of hope on the floats for the New Yr.
d) The U.S.
Although it's not a tradition in every city, some cities in the
U.S. bring in the New Year with gunfire. 12 shots to be exact.
Hopefully, the foolish ones who participate use blanks.
Real bullets do have to come down somewhere.
e) France-
If you're thinking wine, you're right, but there's much more.

The French have family dinners, eat a cake with a good luck trinket
tucked inside, sing songs, exchange gifts and then head out to
watch fireworks. And in some parts of France, they celebrate
the New Yr. by crowning a man and woman with the titles of "King
and Queen."
If you have a custom or tradition that you follow, by all means continue it
and make 2014, your healthiest, happiest and most prosperous New Yr.
And if you want the food Rxs to make it a great yr. go back and look at our
2012 post, "Good Luck Foods Rxs From Around The World!"

That's it- Have a great time wherever you are and continue reading
the info we put out, here and at our main site- SupermarketRxs@typepad.com.
Thank You!

Good Luck!

France's New Year Rx For Improved Memory!

Drink The Bubbly For Better Memory!

When you think of a certain food or beverage, do you sometimes think
of the country that food or beverage came from?

For example, when you think of coffee, does Columbia or
Greece come to mind? Or when you drink tea, do you think

of England or Japan? (Green tea)
And when you think of wine, what country comes to mind?
If you said France, you have the same thoughts as a lot of people.
And when you think of Champagne, does France also come to mind?

Well, wherever it originated or what country consumes the most,
isn't important, what is?
That having a glass of  the "Bubbly" can help improve memory.

That's right- new research says that grapes contain polyphenols,
powerful antioxidants that reduce inflammation and helps
blood flow, especially to the brain.
And for those who aren't drinkers, find these polyphenols in
dark grapes, dark chocolate and blueberries.
One more tip- If you do have a glass or two of champagne a week,
make sure to skip the cigarettes and fatty foods, both of these things
will surely undo the good from the Champagne and do more damage
to your memory.

So, this New Year, drink champagne and build yourself a better memory.

Good Luck!

The Viking Food Rx For Better Moods!

Eat This For A Better Mood!

If  you're a regular reader of this post, then you're well
aware of the health benefits that come from the
Nordic countries.

We've told you about Rye bread, (Denmark) and it's ability
to keep you full and prevent overeating.
And then there's fish. (Iceland and Norway)

We've mentioned how eating fish can
help prevent the blue and dark moods that plague so many,
especially during the dark-filled days of Winter.

And today, it's all about a vegetable that's popular mostly in the
Winter and like fish, it can also help boost moods.
The vegetable: Parsnips!

This vegetable has a sweet, nutty taste and when eaten it
revs up your brain's output of the "happiness" hormone
serotonin. It also contains folate (vital for pregnant women)
a B vitamin that also brightens moods and increases energy.
So, if the less Sun drenched days of Dec. Jan, and Feb. are getting to
you, add more of the Viking food known as parsnips to your menus.

And if you're not sure how to prepare them, use the following
tips...Steam them until soft and then toss in butter, parsley
and dill. Or boil them until soft, and add some sweetners like
dark honey, (or brown sugar) some cream and spices like
cinnamon and nutmeg.

One more tip: If you're concerned about Strokes, eating parsnips is
a great way to lower your risk.

Good Luck!

India's Rx For Taming Holiday Stress!

                         Beat Stress This Holiday Season!

India like Asia has a number of ways to help people stay well, beat
diseases and live longer. And that's understandable,
considering they've been doing it for thousands of yrs.

Stress, is a leading cause of illness in a number of countries,
and with the holidays and all that goes into the holiday season
it's no secret why stress levels rise.

Some nations may resort to the old fashioned pills, (doctor-
prescribed meds) but not the people of India.
You're probably thinking yoga or meditation, they're not.
No--the cures we're going to give you consist of something natural.
Although there's nothing wrong about using those 2 disciplines to lower
stress levels, today-it's all about Ashwagandha and Tulsi.
First the Ashwagandha-
This flowering plant has been used in India for centuries, and it's considered
a natural tranquilizer, A tranquilizer that's as effective as valium and much safer
and less costly. Ashwagandha works by lowering levels of the stress hormone
cortisol, and the lower cortisol in your system, the lower your anxiety and
stress levels.
It's also recommended to students who need help focusing and concentrating.
Look for Aswagandha at health-food stores or online at LuckyVitamin.com
or SwansonVitamins.com Take about 250 mg. to 500 mg. before your biggest meal.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now on to the Tulsi!
Also known as Holy basil, it's an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and it comes
in a tea. Tulsi is receiving raves as an alternative to the antidepressants doctors are
prescribing that are costly and addictive. So, if blue moods cause you concern this
time of year, perhaps some Tulsi will have you feeling better than you have in
yrs. Look for Tulsi tea online at Drugstore, com the brand--Organic India Tulsi
Tea. Price- $5 for 18 tea bags.
As with any type of supplement or tea, it's best to talk to your Dr.
before taking any kind of natural product.

Great Britain's Rx For Preventing Stroke!

                      Eat Less Fish and Chips!

The practice of eating Fish and Chips may be over for the Brits,
why? Deep frying food in hot oil increases your risk of getting a stroke,
(strokes- caused by a disruption of blood flow to the brain)
Unlike baking, broiling or grilling, or steaming, deep frying foods produces
trans fats, (troublesome compounds) that attach themselves to artery
walls, making your brain's blood vessels more likely to clog.

But hold on, there's some good news- you don't have to give up

fish and chips entirely, have them once a month or once every 2 months,
and you slash your risk of every getting a stroke by 30%.
Another tip: learn some alternative ways to cook the beloved dish.

World's Best Rxs For Preventing Holiday Weight Gain!

         Stay Slim This Holiday Season!

The Winter holidays are here, and in some parts of the World-
the celebrations may be different than they are here in the U.S.

In the U.S. food is a big part of celebrating the holidays.
If you're one who celebrates with different foods and beverages,
be sure to proceed with caution, why?
It's not uncommon to gain anywhere from 3 to 15 pounds during
the Winter months, and if you want to prevent weight gain or just maintain
your weight, do like the folks from these countries...

a)  Cuba, Dominican Republic, Sardinia and Tuscany-
The people from these countries make beans the centerpieces of
their meals and researchers say the people are doing the right,
as far as weight is concerned. Beans, fill you up with soluble fiber.
Plus, the body burns lots of calories as it tries to break down fiber
and raising metabolism.
If you're not a bean eater, it's best to start slowly.
Make black, red, or Navy beans and pour them over rice.
b) Greece-
It could a number of things, the less stressful lifestyles, the olive oil,
the coffee, but it's actually the yogurt. Greek yogurt is creamier, tangier
and denser, and it packs twice as much protein as regular yogurt.
And more protein means a faster metabolism and more muscle growth.
Find Greek yogurt at supermarkets, throw in a few walnuts, and
some dark honey for a creamier, low-calorie dessert.

c) France-
Like the Greeks, it could be a number of things, but we'll name 2.
The cheese and the long, lingering dinners.
Lingering over dinner with conversation and slow eating can pay big
dividends, regarding your weight. Rush through a meal in 10 minutes
and your brain won't get the message that you're full and in another
hour, you're hungry again. Take your time and enjoy the meal,
another tip: chew each piece of food about 20 times.
Now on to the cheese, the cheese is made with a better quality
of milk and that results in more protein, and protein can help you
burn more fat and build stronger muscles. Ask the person behind the meat
or deli counter (at your local supermarket) to recommend a good
quality French cheese.
d) Japan-
Green tea and mushrooms.
Don't waste money buying expensive mushrooms, white button
will do the job just like Portabellas. Mushrooms keep cravings at bay.
e) Jamaica-

The frequent use of ginger is the reason for the slimmer Jamaican waistlines.
The heat from ginger increases the body's internal temperature, stoking your metabolism to burn fat all day long.  Add it to tea, or to stir-fried veggies,
There you have 5 countries and their secrets for preventing weight gain,
that's so prevalent in other countries.
