Good Luck Foods For The New Year!

                             Eat Your Way To Better Luck In 2016! 

If you believe in superstitions or traditions or rituals then you
may want to do like the people of some Southern states do on the first
of the year.
And what is that?
They eat black-eyed peas. 


And along with the peas, they have greens, collards and turnips, (green
for financial success) rice and pork.
This is considered "soul food, but for some reason, the people think their
new year will be a financial success if they eat these particular foods.
And if you come from a country that has a particular food ritual for
the new year, then by all means continue it and if you like to start a new ritual 

and follow in the footsteps of your American brothers and sisters, use the recipe
listed below.
The Recipe For "Hoppin' John!" 
Ingredients:
Bacon, 3 slices, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped 1 cup
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. black pepper
1/8 tsp. curry powder
1/8 tsp. paprika 

1 Tbs. apple cider vinegar
2 cups of rice, cooked
2 cups of chopped greens, collards (buy them already cleaned)
1 can of black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained
1 cup of cherry tomatoes

Directions: 
In a large nonstick skillet, cook the bacon until done,
Add the onion, garlic and the seasonings.
Stir frequently, just until the onions and garlic are tender. 

And to finish up this tasty dish, add the vinegar and 1/2 cup of water;
bring to a boil and cook for a minute. Stir in the rice, greens and peas, cook until
heated through, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the tomatoes.
And to make this meal more traditional- serve it with some cornbread.

Christmas Celebrations Around The World!

                            Celebrate Christmas! 

If you're from the U.S. your idea of Christmas may be waking up at 6:00 am to open gifts,
a nice meal at 2:00 pm. and then a big dinner with more friends and family at 6:00 pm. 

But what about those who live in say...Russia, Scotland or France?
How do they celebrate? Continue reading to find out.
a) France-

Let them eat cake. In some parts of France, a cake is baked and a trinket
is hidden inside. Find the trinket in the piece of cake served to you and 

you're crowned King or Queen for a day.
b) China-
Some Christians in China celebrate like we Americans do, and they also
decorate the halls with bright paper chains to symbolize happiness and represent
eternity  at their family's never-ending bond.
c) Germany-
Christmas trees and advent calendars originated in Germany, but there's one
tradition that's different than ours (Americans) they the Germans hide a pickle.
As in a glass pickle and the folks in Germany hide it in the tree.
And the child lucky enough to find this pickle will get an extra present.
d) Spain-
Play a game. What type of game? It's called "Um of Fate" and it's simply
a game where each person's name is written on card, which is put in a bowl called
the "Um of Fate" The cards are then drawn 2 at a time--and each pair is fated
to be each other's special protector, friend and confidante in the new year.
e) Scotland-
Burn, baby burn.. No, there's not a big bonfire. Simply put, the people burn a twig
as they release any grudges they've been holding toward others. They do this on
 "Sowans Nicht" or Christmas Eve.
f) Russia-
Become unified.
In Russia,  where most Christians belong to the Eastern Orthodox Church, the
centerpiece of Christmas eve dinner is a porridge called Kutya that symbolizes
unity.
g) Finland-
Feed the birds.
People in Finland tie together some oats, wheat and other grains to a pole or tree 

on Christmas morning. And get this, Finnish people don't eat until the birds
have eaten.
h) Sweden- 

Drink up. More specifically- Glogg. A mulled wine flavored with sugar and spices and

i) Norway-
Open your presents. 

No ripping apart all of the gifts like they do in the U.S.
In Norway, it's pick up one gift and pass it to another child and ( ho or she) opens it

and then waits until that one's been opened and enjoyed to pick out and pass another--

The Scandinavian Rx To Prevent Winter Illness!

                           Help For That Sore Throat! 

Like a lot of people, you probably enjoy the Winter months. 

The snow, the holidays, the endless array of food, warm fireplaces,
skiing, skating, family gatherings, etc.
And if you're like most (normal) people, you probably hate driving

in the snow, the weight gain from all of that good food and getting sick. 
And by getting sick, we mean the beginning of a cold, the sore throat. 

And if you're one who likes to use only natural methods to try and conquer
sore throats, colds and flu, then you may want to use the following recipe,
a recipe that can shut down and even prevent sore throats.
And something even better, the vegetables in this recipe
are now being recognized as one of the main contributing factors to
longevity records that the people of Denmark, Norway, Finland,
Iceland and Sweden currently enjoy.

And what is the contributing factor?
Root vegetables.
That's right, the women of Denmark, Finland and Norway take great pleasure
in growing and cooking onions, cabbage, turnips and parsnips
and these root vegetables are allowing the women (and men) to live well into
their 80's and 90's, trailing right behind the Japanese, (in terms of longevity).

So, if you're a vegetable lover, and you want to prevent sore throats and
hopefully live well into your 90's, just copy the recipe listed below.

Root Vegetable Medley!
Ingredients:
1 lb. onions
1 lb. carrots
1 lb. parsnips
1/2 lb. turnips 

3 Tbs. butter
1/2 cup pine nuts
1 1/2 Tbs. minced garlic
4 to 6 wedges of lemon
1 Tbs. fresh minced parsley
--------------------------------------------
Directions:
Trim and peel onions, cut into thick wedges.
Trim and peel the carrots and parsnips, cut into thick
diagonal slices. Clean the turnips, peel them and then dice them. 

Combine the veggies with a 1/2 cup of water and place in 3 to 3-1/2
qt. microwave safe baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap, microwave on
high until all of the veggies are tender, (about 10 to 12 mins.)
Stir the veggies while they're in the microwave.
In the meantime, take out a skillet, turn on the heat, (medium-high)
and melt the butter. Add the pine nuts, watching them so they don't burn,
add the minced garlic, until lightly browned. Drain the vegetables, 

move them to a platter and top them with the garlic, pine nuts and minced parsley.
And lastly, squeeze the lemon juice over the vegetables, or
give a slice (or 2) of lemon to family (or guests) and let them
put their own lemon juice on.
That's it, this should serve 5 to 6 people.

Well, that's about to change, while going through our emails, we received
a recipe for a beverage that promises to not only heal a sickly heart, it (the beverage)
can help those who are already heart healthy and want to keep it that way.
The beverage was created by a German nun some centuries ago, to help 

the women and men stay healthy during the tough Winter months and then the recipe
was rediscovered by some medical professions centuries later, who discovered it
can help those who needed something natural after suffering from all types of heart 

ailments. 

You know, ailments like arrhythmia, angina, tiredness after a little exertion, cardiac
weakness enlarged heart and other problems concerning the heart.
And if you're concerned about your heart health or the heart health of your loved ones,
perhaps you should give this a recipe a try.
The recipe for...
Heart Health Wine!
Ingredients:
1 bunch of parsley- stems removed, cleaned and cut up.
1 liter of good quality wine, dark red, black or white
Red wine or balsamic or apple cider vinegar 3 Tbs.
1/2 cup good quality dark honey (Manuka)
1 large-sized bottle with a top

Directions:
In a medium-sized or large saucepan place the first 3 ingredients.
Turn the heat on medium and (and then turn it down to low after  2 mins.) and
allow the ingredients to simmer for 10 mins.
After ten minutes turn off the heat and add the honey.
Stir well and let the ingredients mesh together and cool. 

After the wine mixture has cooled, place the ingredients into a large
bottle, seal it up and store it in a cool, dark place. 


And lastly, have a Tbs. of the wine mixture before heading off to
work or school, or in the evening before heading off to bed.
Or pour a little over a bowl of fruit, (berries) or over a salad.
An Important tip:
If you're being treated for any kind of heart problem and are taking
any type of medication, do not go off or throw out your prescribed medication 

in favor of this recipe. Please talk it over with your medical adviser or doctor 
before making any changes.

Healing Fruits of The Mediterranean!

In the U.S. Farmers' Markets are quite popular this time of year, you know local farmers
selling fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy products, meats and baked goods. 

And if you're lucky enough to travel to Europe, more specifically, The Mediterranean, 
try and take advantage of the fruits and vegetables the farmers are selling at their
outdoor markets.

a) Grapes-

The Mediterranean Rxs For Using Olive Oil!

There's no doubt that eating (and wearing some) olive oil will greatly

Stay Healthy Rx While Traveling!

                             Stay Safe On Airplanes! 

If you're fortunate enough to visit loved ones in another state or country-
or if you just plan on visiting a country for the sights, make sure you stay safe.
Stay safe, how?
As in cleaning your hands.

That's right, the norovirus--best known for causing diarrhea and vomiting on 
cruise ships-can also strike on planes. 
And to combat it-make sure to carry alcohol hand sanitizer and use it after touching anything,
and by anything we mean pillows, head rest, the arm rest, etc. and also use some 

on your hands before eating. 

Another health concern many people traveling on long flights should think about: 

Blood clots.
If you're in the U.S. and plan on traveling to Europe that could mean over 12 hours
sitting in one spot. 

To combat this...
* drink some water before the flight.
* eat some grapes, apples and kiwi--all 3 keep blood circulating.

As the end of March finishes up,  April will soon be here.
And with April comes more rain, warmer temperatures,
Easter and allergies.
Allergies?
